Not using this on the item page preview yet, but we will!
I like this approach over e.g. a web component specifically for the
sandboxing: while I don't exactly *distrust* JS that we're loading from
Neopets.com, I don't like the idea of *any* part of the site that
executes arbitrary JS unsafely at runtime, even if we theoretically
trust where it theoretically came from. I don't want any failure
upstream to have effects on us!
I copied basically all of the JS from a related project
`impress-media-server` that I had spun up at one point, to investigate
similar embed techniques. Easy peasy drop-in-squeezy!
Oh right okay, attributes like `status="loading"` are more of an API
for the caller, whereas the internal state API is where you wanna put
things that are meant to be used in CSS selectors and stuff.
Instead of doing all this listening to Turbo events etc to know when
outfit layers might have changed, making it a custom element and wiring
in the behavior to its actual lifecycle makes it always Just Work!
The UI for it is just basic for my own testing rn: it sets the preview
background to gray while loading, then back to white when done!
This uses the new CSS `:has()` selector: we have JS manage the loading
state on each layer, then the container just restyles itself based on
whether any currently-loading layers are present.
This is a cute thing that I think sets us up for other stuff down the
line: move more of the outfit appearance logic into the `Outfit` class!
Now, we set up the item page with a temporary instance of `Outfit`,
then ask for its `visible_layers`.
Still missing restricted-zones logic and such, that's next!
Just stripping out the big React component, and having Rails output it!
There's a lot of work rn in extracting the Impress 2020 dependency from
the `wardrobe-2020` React app, and I'm just curious to see if we can
simplify it at all by pulling this stuff *way* back to basics, and
deleting the item page part of `wardrobe-2020` altogether.
In this draft, we regress a lot of functionality: it just shows the
item on a Blue Acara, with no ability to change it! I'm gonna play with
putting more of that back in.
I also haven't actually removed any of the item page React code; I just
stopped calling it. That can be a cleanup for another time, once we're
confident in this experiment!
The table layout algo can get a bit funky about how it assigns extra
space, I want to encourage things like "Total: 5 items" etc not to
wrap, esp in the Dyeworks case where it's quite long!
There's more and more going on in here! Let's omit the base item name,
increase the table width a bit in this case, and tweak the rest a bit
while we're here.
I think it helps a bit to have only the label be dotted-underlined, to
hint that I'm offering help about what that *means*, but clear the way
for the value itself to be more visible and less cluttered.
I started writing this up, then sent a preview to a friend, and he was
like "oh cool, but also this is not correct?"
I didn't realize Dyeworks has limited-time support to be *able* to dye
certain items. Hey, glad we're writing this guide for people like me,
then! lol
I wonder if we can lean on Owls for this. It seems like they already
list "Permanent Dyeworks" for some items, I wonder if they say
something special for active limited-edition Dyeworks items!
A funny table-layout bug, where the item "Portal to the Unknown" had a
very long Owls listing ("Owls listing: Buyable - Magic Lens + Blank
Grey Tome (NP)"), and so the table layout tried to give it more room by
decreasing the width of the action cell and wrapping the "NC Trades"
action button text onto multiple lines.
The fix: don't allow that! The table layout will figure out how to
handle this being disallowed, and give the actions cell an appropriate
minimum width.
Note that there's a known performance issue here: we should try to
fetch all the OWLS values at once, instead of doing them in sequence
while rendering the page!
Oh jeez, idk why this was ever in here, but yeah no, I want to be using
default browser focus outlines unless specifically overridden otherwise.
Will help keyboard navigation a lot! Yikes!!
Ohh yeah, this helps communicate the process much better, especially
for what the Shops/Trades links mean.
I think I'm gonna also go get the paint brush thumbnail images and add
them to the database too, to help better communicate that this is a
paint brush item situation.
Clearer focus states, row changes bg color on hover/focus to help you
track where you are, remove the redundant image thumbnail link from the
tab order (it's the same as the item name link!)
As part of this, I added a new `search_icon` helper, and a new
`button_link_to` helper, which both styles the link as a button and
accepts an `icon` parameter to make it easier to pass in an icon!
This helps us be more efficient with our use of space, keep the CTAs well
aligned, show a clear total, and set up how we might do CTAs for more complex
cases like all the potential Neopoint CTAs like Wiz/Trades/Auction/etc!
Now that we have this helper, we no longer need these stylesheets to
include a `body.controller-action` wrapper to scope all the styles!
Someday we should convert more of our stylesheets to this format,
instead of slamming them all into `application.sass` like we do now.
Ah, well!
NC prices, some CSS, and also a new application-level helper that adds
a feature I've long wanted and been working around for Turbo: the
ability to specific that a stylesheet is specific to the current page,
and should be unloaded when removed!
I use this to write `sources.sass` without the usual
`body.items-sources` scoping that we've historically used to control
what pages a stylesheet applies to. (In the long past, this was because
a lot of stylesheets were—and still are–routed through the
`application.sass` stylesheet! But even for more recent standalone page
stylesheets, I've done the scoping, to avoid issues with styles leaking
beyond the page they're meant for when Turbo does a navigation.)
TNT requested that we figure out ways to connect the dots between
people's intentions on DTI to their purchases in the NC Mall.
But rather than just slam ad links everywhere, our plan is to design an
actually useful feature about it: the "Item Getting Guide". It'll break
down items by how you can actually get them (NP economy, NC Mall,
retired NC, Dyeworks, etc), and we're planning some cute actions you
can take, like shortcuts for getting them onto trade wishlists or into
your NC Mall cart.
This is just a little demo version of the page, just breaking down
items specified in the URL into NC/NP/PB! Later we'll do more granular
breakdown than this, with more info and actions—and we'll also like,
link to it at all, which isn't the case yet! (The main way we expect
people to get here is by a "Get these items" button we'll add to the
outfit editor, but there might be other paths, too.)
I refresh the image and UI color here to draw attention to the change!
I also delete the `neopass-thumbnail.png` image, since it's no longer
used anywhere anymore, but I would not be surprised if we want it back
someday and need to revive it from history!
Just a lil blurb to make sure it's clear that NC sales and stuff are
forbidden! I imagine the people doing it know this, but I want to make
sure we're being explicit, in case there's any element of
miscommunication.
Got the icon and background style from Neopets.com! I didn't quite copy
the whole button style, both because getting it to play nice with our
existing styles didn't *immediately* work, but also because I think
this works out as a really good compromise between our two styles
anyway!
I'm getting ready to add handling for "what if you don't *have* a
current password*??", so it seems like the right way to do that is to
just eject the controller and start customizing!
Motivation is that I wanna add NeoPass stuff to here! But also like,
it's looked bad for a long time, let's clean it up!! (I just used the
Devise default without any styling at all lol)
Oh right, all these cute overrides should be scoped to the page!
I guess we skipped this because we had pulled this out into a
separate stylesheet. Curiously learning more about how Turbo handles
this kind of thing, like that it doesn't *unload* stylesheets that
*leave* the page when you navigate!
First one, Turbo reasonably yelled at us in the JS console that we
should put its script tag in the `head` rather than the `body`, because
it re-executes scripts in the `body` and we don't want to spin up Turbo
multiple times!
I also removed some scripts that aren't relevant anymore, fixed a bug
in `outfits/new.js` where failing to load a donation pet would cause
the preview thing to not work when you type (I think this might've
already been an issue?), reworked `item_header.js` to just run once in
the `head`, and split scripts into `:javascripts` (run once in `head`)
vs `:javascripts_body` (run every page load in `body`).
Oh right, we don't have Rails UJS going on anymore, which is what
handled the confirmation prompts for deleting lists. Turbo is the more
standard modern solution to that, and should speed up certain
pageloads, so let's do it!
Here I install the `turbo-rails` gem, then run `rails turbo:install` to
install the `@hotwired/turbo-rails` npm package. Then I move
`application.js` that's run all on pages but the outfit editor into our
section of JS that gets run through the bundler, and add Turbo to it.
I had to fix a couple tricky things:
1. The outfit editor page doesn't play nice with being swapped into the
document, so I make it require a full page reload instead.
2. Prefetching the Sign In link can cause the wrong `return_to` address
to be written to the `session`. (It's a GET request that does, ever
so slightly, take its own actions, oops!) As a simple hacky answer,
we disallow prefetching on that link.
Haven't fixed up the UJS stuff for confirm prompts to use Turbo yet,
that's next!
I changed the type of this tag without realizing the JS references it
by both class and `div`!
I think at the time this was a perf suggestion for jQuery, because the
best way to query by class name was to query by tag first then filter?
It's possible our jQuery still does this, but I don't imagine it's very
relevant today, so I'll just remove that for better guarding against
similar bugs in the future instead.
Okay, so I still don't know why rendering is just so slow (though
migrating away from item translations did help!), but I can at least
cache entire closet lists as a basic measure.
That way, the first user to see the latest version of a closet list
will still need just as much time to load it… but *only* the ones that
have changed since last time (rather than always the full page), and
then subsequent users get to reuse it too!
Should help a lot for high-traffic lists, which incidentally are likely
to be the big ones belonging to highly active traders!
One big change we needed to make was to extract the `user-owns` and
`user-wants` classes (which we use for trade matches for *the user
viewing the list right now*) out of the cached HTML, and apply them
after with Javascript instead. I always dislike moving stuff to JS, but
the wins here seem. truly very very good, all things considered!
From an era when we didn't have that! Now we do!
(My motivation is that I'm trying to add new JS to this page and errors
in stickUp are crashing the page early, womp womp!)
Impress 2020 has had this for a while, I've wanted it for reference on
occasion, let's bring it in!
Very similar logic, and Ruby & Rails's date affordances are super
helpful for simplifying how to express it!
I think I cleared this from the outfits/new template a while ago, but
never cleaned up this file, because I was too anxious that I was
correctly identifying all its call sites. But now I'm more confident!
At least, they seem unused to me on a quick audit! The scriptaculous
stuff has long been replaced by jQuery UI equivalents. (Wow, so many
generations of libraries! lol)
Mostly this is just me testing out what it would look like to
modularize the app more… I've noticed that some concerns, like
fundraising, are just not relevant to most of the app, and being able
to lock them away inside subfolders feels like it'll help tidy up
long folder lists.
Notably, I haven't touched the models case yet, because I worry that
might be a bit more complex, whereas everything else seems pretty
well-isolated? We'll try it out!
Using good ol'-fashioned cookies! The JS sets it, and then Rails reads
it on pageload. That way, there's no flash of content for it to load in
after JS loads.
Oh right, I just remembered how tabs work, they join with the page when
selected! lol
Something about this still feels off to me, but idk, I find it charming
and I wanna just let it rock.
They can just ellipsis, that's fine, the full name is not essential
when you're just scanning the list; you're gonna pop it open and see
the full name during contact anyway.
I guess I deleted this a while ago without really noticing… I think I'd
at some point like to replace this with like, the DTI 2020 improved
table layout thing, but I figured this would be pretty quick to throw
in and make the page not feel like a pain to use lmao
There was a static page explaining it, which we no longer link to; and
there was an unused field in the User model for who was a beta tester
for it. Goodbye!
This hasn't worked for a while, and I don't know an API off the top of
my head to drop in for it. Let's just delete it for now, and revisit it
later if we want to!
Now, like in DTI 2020, opening an outfit will go straight to the editor.
I'm not 100% on whether this is actually like. the superior behavior?
But I think it's good enough, and it's what the wardrobe-2020 code
expects, so let's just roll with it for now!
I hope this doesn't cause problems! But yeah, with Puma doing threading, and maybe switching to Falcon someday to get even better concurrency properties, I feel like this will probably be fine?
And it makes the UX a loootttt better, to be back in the world where all these forms just work, whew.
Just cleaning up a bit! I'm sure there's more to remove, these were just some clear candidates: old wardrobe code, and stuff in `public` that I just fully don't recognize and don't think is doing anything? (We'll find out if something crashes though lol!)
This required a buncha fixes to how SASS scoping works! Needed to add a bunch of imports for stuff that previously would get read from the global scope by being imported *after* the constants and mixins etc.
There's clearly a lot of refactor opportunity here, but I'm not gonna worry about it!!
I wasn't sure what we were actually using it for, turns out it was mostly polyfills for CSS features that are very standard now!
I didn't audit these changes very carefully tbqh because they seemed pretty simple? Fingers crossed!
Eyyy tasty! There were some issues with conflicting styles with the main app, but I think we got it!
Scoping Chakra's CSS reset was a big deal to not accidentally overwrite the app's own styles lol, and we had to solve a specificity problem for that, thanks Aria for the :where tip!! <3
We add jsbuilding-rails to get esbuild running in the app, and then we copy-paste the files we need from impress-2020 into here!
I stopped at the point where it was building successfully, but it's not running correctly: it's not sure about `process.env` in `next`, and I think the right next step is to delete the NextJS deps altogether and use React Router instead.
This is a bit more standard, and has the bonus of being compatible with Devise, which is using `flash[:notice]` and so its flashes were coming out unstyled, oops!
We've already swapped out the backend for this stuff to Impress 2020, so the resque task and the broken image report UI aren't actually relevant anymore. Delete them!
This helps us delete Resque soon too.

Okay, surprise, the bug was unrelated to Camo config (though I'm glad I cleaned
that up anyway :P). We now, at a low level, serve a placeholder image for item
thumbnail URL if, for some reason, we don't have a good thumbnail URL on hand.
Turns out ~22% of our users initially land on a trade list.
We like to keep the campaign off the pages where space is at a
premium, so we try to whitelist it to major landing pages in order
to avoid accidentally creating a bad experience on some page :)
